Women from all over Spain mobilized this Friday to celebrate 8M

Thousands of women demonstrated this Friday for everything Spain in favor of equality and against sexual violence and prostitution, despite the division within the feminist movement that was noted, once again, in Madrid, where two different marches were called.

Sources from the Spanish Government Delegation estimated that 30,000 attended the main demonstration in the Spanish capital, compared to the 500,000 offered by the organization, and 4,000 attended the other alternative gathering, far from the 30,000 people estimated by the organizers.

The marches served to show the strength of the feminist movement, which flooded the streets of Madrid with purple, but also, as has been common in recent years, its fragmentation, even when it came to prioritizing its messages.

They both started at the same time. The one organized by Commission 8 millionwith the main representatives of the Spanish coalition government, and the second with Madrid Feminist Movement (MFM)with the presence of the representative of the conservative Popular Party (PP).

Ana Redondowho debuted this Friday as Minister of Equality in the 8M, boasted that Spain is “the fourth European democracy in terms of equality”, which implies that “the movement is being made in the right direction”, although he considers that there are still “too many gaps” to fill and policies to combat such as “extreme right-wing denialists”.

In the same demonstration, although with her own leader, former Equality Minister Irene Montero marched, highlighting the differences between the previous representatives of the ministry and the current ones.

The demonstration took place without incident and in a festive atmosphere, leaving all the emphasis on the messages, banners, proclamations and shouts of the participants, supported by the banner that said ‘Patriarchy, genocides, privileges #seacabó’.

However, the other demonstration, called by the Feminist Movement, carried the slogan “Prostitution is not a job. Abolition now! under which organizers focused on abolishing prostitution and criticizing trans law and pornography.

In other Spanish capitals, marches to demand real equality were replicated, with Barcelona being another of the most important.

The demonstration brought together around 40 thousand people, according to Guarda Urbana, to protest against the precariousness and inequalities suffered by women.

The march in the Catalan capital had a plural and inclusive character and multiple references to migrations that have “a woman’s face”.
