Gálvez highlighted that, unlike López Obradorshe could live in one of the huts built by former president Vicente Fox (2000-2006) within what is now the cultural complex of The pines.

“I can’t imagine living in that little house (Los Pinos). I do not need this. I could live in the cabin where Fox lived without any problems. It’s much bigger than the house I have, my current house is 250 meters (square), I think this one is about 500 meters (square), in principle it’s much bigger”, he emphasized.

Furthermore, he indicated that, if he could do so, he would continue to live in his current residence and travel by bicycle to The pines to work.

“It is clear to me that this it would be practically impossiblesecurity guards would tell me I’m crazy, but hey (…) I’d love to live in my house and ride my bike (to work)“, he said.

Since his presidential campaign, López Obrador He said that if he won the elections he would not live in The pines because it was “a place that has bad vibes” and, on December 1, 2018, after taking office, he opened the residence to the public as a new cultural space.

In mid-2019, the president confirmed that he was already sleeping in the National Palace in an apartment built there by the former president Felipe Calderon (2006-2012).

Initially, López Obrador declared that he would not live in National Palacebut in a rented apartment in historic center.

However, once he made the decision to live in this area, he described it as “a ring of honor”as it was the residence of Benito Juárez, whom he repeatedly described as the best president of the Mexico.
