Former Chinese Football Federation president sentenced to life in prison for corruption

Chen Xuyuan, former president of the football federation China who confessed on television to having received bribes, was sentenced to life in prison as part of a major campaign against corruption in this sport, state media announced Tuesday.

Between 2010 and 2023, Chen took advantage of their positions in the federation and other organizations “to illegally accepting sums of money from other people totaling 81.03 million yuan”, about 11 million dollarsindicated this newspaper.

The sports leader sought to obtain “undue advantages for various football clubs and local football associations” by fixing games or promotions or impose sanctions on arbitrators.

The information contained in this medium guarantees that the bribes paid to Chen were “particularly huge” and that his actions undermined “fair competition and order in the football sector”.

“It caused serious consequences for the national football industry”states the newspaper.

Since his rise to power more than a decade ago, the Chinese president, Xi Jinpingan avowed football fan, he promoted a broad campaign against corruption in the public sectors.

This policy has had a strong impact on the national football industry since last year, with four important cases expected to be concluded this Tuesday, according to state news agency Xinhua.
