Spanish Prime Minister intends to recognize Palestinian state before summer

The idea has already been mentioned several times, it is becoming more and more clear. Spain’s left-wing government aims to recognize a Palestinian state by the summer, according to statements by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Amman, Jordan, published Tuesday by several Spanish dailies. “We must think seriously about doing this (recognition of a Palestinian state, editor’s note) this semester,” the Socialist leader, quoted in particular by the Catalan daily La Vanguardia, told a group of Spanish journalists accompanying him on the tour. across three countries. in the Middle East, starting with Jordan.

These words from Pedro Sánchez confirm the apparent acceleration of the timetable he recently put forward for the recognition of a Palestinian state. On March 9, he announced that he would invite the Spanish Parliament to vote on this recognition before the end of the legislature, that is, by the summer of 2027.

Recognition in case of “positive contribution” to the war

Less than two weeks later, on March 22, on the sidelines of the European summit in Brussels, Pedro Sánchez and his Irish, Maltese and Slovenian counterparts issued a joint declaration in which they declared that they were “ready to recognize Palestine,” specifying that they would do so “when will be able to make a positive contribution (to the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, editor’s note) and when the circumstances arise.”

For its part, the Madrid newspaper El País believes that this recognition could happen during the campaign for the European Parliament elections, which will take place on June 9 in Spain, “or in the following weeks.” According to the newspaper, Pedro Sánchez told the journalists accompanying him that it would be necessary to “follow the decisions that will soon be taken in Brussels and New York,” that is, by the EU and the UN, meaning that Spain’s decision will be related to development international situation.

El País also understands that Pedro Sánchez, who after Jordan will travel this Tuesday to Saudi Arabia and this Wednesday to Qatar, wants to “try to convince the Arab countries that have not yet recognized Israel”, as is the case with these two Persian countries bay: “do it.” Pedro Sanchez has repeatedly stated that the only solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict involves the recognition of two states – Israel and Palestine.
