Mexico: Experts say the government could have saved 224,000 people if it had better managed the COVID-19 pandemic

It also noted that the government’s strategy to combat the pandemic included excessive personalization, rejection of deliberation and scientific evidence.

Likewise, he specified that government communication was affected by the minimization of the seriousness of the situation, the misleading use of data, the pseudoscientific justification of political decisions and the decision to manage society’s perception, “instead of managing” the health crisis to prevent infections and deaths as much as possible.”

Another conclusion was that the weaknesses of the health system were exacerbated due to “regressive” reforms and an erratic policy of underperformance and spending cuts, “which reduced its capacity to respond to the crisis”.

Regarding the socioeconomic issue, they highlighted the lack of protection for popular sectors and vulnerable groups due to the lack of economic stimuli, the pronounced increase in family health expenditure, as well as the impact on mortality, orphanhood and life expectancy, which ended up affecting people with lower incomes more.
