USA: two killed and six wounded in Memphis shooting

A neighborhood party turned into drama on Saturday in the US. Two people were killed and six others were injured in the shooting that happened around 7 pm (local time or 2 am in France) in Memphis, local police said.

Two people were found dead at the scene, and one of the six victims was hospitalized “in critical condition,” police in the southeast Tennessee city of Memphis wrote on X. It was initially announced that 14 people were injured, but the number of casualties was later reduced.

According to law enforcement, the shooting occurred during an unauthorized party of 200 to 300 people near Orange Mound Park in Memphis.

Videos posted on social media showed the car sailing across a basketball court in front of a crowd as shots were fired.

Two suspects wanted

“We believe there were at least two people involved in the shooting,” Interim Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis told CBS News, adding that two suspects are currently being sought.

The circumstances of the tragedy are still very unclear at this time.

The United States, with more guns than people, has the highest gun death rate of any developed country. Shootings are a recurring scourge that successive governments have so far been powerless to address, yet many Americans remain deeply attached to their guns.

The nongovernmental organization Gun Violence Archive, which classifies mass shootings as those in which at least four people are killed or injured, has counted 120 such incidents in the United States since Jan. 1. In 2023, there were 656 mass shootings.
