“He took a huge risk, he is paying for it”: Iranian Orelsan Toomaj Salehi sentenced to death

In the song “Surah Mush” Tumaj Salehi read: “Is freedom dear? Yes, his defenders are dying. “This was in 2021. The 33-year-old artist, a well-known figure throughout the Iranian diaspora, had just been sentenced to death for “corruption on Earth,” one of the most serious charges in the Islamic Republic, his lawyers said. The Isfahan Revolutionary Court also charged the rapper with “incitement to sedition, assembly, conspiracy, propaganda against the system and calls for riots.”

Tumaj, his stage name, was arrested in late October 2022, a few weeks after the death of Mahsa Amini. This young Iranian Kurd was arrested by the morality police for violating the strict dress code for women. In the weeks leading up to his arrest, Toumaj Salehi participated in all the demonstrations of people at the breaking point. On her Instagram account, which is followed by a million people, we heard her support the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, encourage protesters, sing about anger.
