Tornado hits Guangzhou, China, north of Hong Kong

Severe weather continues in southern China. The city of Canton, also called Guangzhou, was hit by a tornado this Saturday afternoon. There is no information about possible casualties yet, but significant damage has been noted.

This video shows the phenomenon occurring in the center of a city of about 15 million people. A lot of debris flies off.

This tornado did not last long as it passed through this region, located about one hundred kilometers north of Hong Kong. It also caused power outages, as these images show.

Many buildings in the affected area were damaged. The roofs were blown off. Debris litters the ground.

This tornado occurred while the region was experiencing severe thunderstorms. Hail the size of tennis balls fell here on Saturday afternoon.

More broadly, all of southern China has been experiencing severe weather recently. In the Guangdong region, where Canton is located, floods have caused several deaths since last week. Tens of thousands of residents had to be evacuated.
