Tensions simmering on America’s most prestigious campuses suddenly escalated this week. The protest movement against the war in Gaza is spreading to all four corners of the country and is now becoming a debate in the race for the White House.
From Seattle to Boston, Atlanta to New York and Yale to Stanford, universities are trying in vain to defuse protests less than a month before classes end. In Atlanta, on the Emory University campus, demonstrators were violently pushed back by police, who dismantled tents and made numerous arrests. This week, the University of Southern California in Los Angeles decided to cancel its traditional graduation ceremony, a holiday beloved by all students. Quite a symbol.
