European Elections 2024: Beware, only a few days left to register on the voter list

The European elections will be held on June 9, but the first deadline is approaching: the deadline to register on the electoral register and be able to vote. Depending on whether you choose to register online or at City Hall, you have until May 1st or May 3rd to complete the process.

Before discussing the registration procedure, first check to see if you are already registered on your municipality’s voter rolls. For this purpose, this can be done in a few clicks through the portal service-public.fr.

Automatic registration for new adults

If you have not changed municipalities since the last election, the 2022 Legislative Elections, you are typically already registered and do not need to take any action. If you have just turned 18, your registration will occur automatically, provided you took the census at age 16. Finally, if you have acquired French citizenship since 2019, your registration will be automatically carried out at the city hall of your place of residence after naturalization.

If you are correctly registered, you will also be told which office to go to when voting. On June 9, you can vote even if you don’t have a voting card, just a simple ID card is enough. Among other things accepted: ID card, passport, vital card, driver’s license or even hunting license. However, please note that in the case of ID and passport, the documents must be valid or their validity period must not exceed 5 years.

Registration, instructions for use

If you are not registered on your municipality’s electoral register, for example after moving, you have until May 1 to register online and until May 3 if you go to city hall to take action.

The online procedure couldn’t be simpler: at service-public.fr all you have to do is register, then provide a scanned copy of your identification document as well as a copy of proof of address not older than three months (electricity, water, telephone bill , rent receipt or tax notice). Government agencies then send your registration directly to your local mayor’s office to update voter rolls.

If you decide to go to the town hall, the procedure remains the same, you do not need to provide any more documents. However, you need to go to the town hall in the city where you live and where you plan to vote.

If you are not French, but a citizen of an EU country, you can also vote in these elections, as in municipal elections. All you need to do is request, using the same procedure, your registration in the supplementary electoral rolls. You are simply asked to add an affidavit (this can be done in a few clicks on service-public.fr) in which you undertake not to vote in your country of origin during the elections.
