‘Six-year-old’: Biden mocks Trump again

Traditionally, during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, where all the elite, journalists and celebrities gather, the president smiles as a comedian rips him off in front of an audience in tuxedos and long dresses. , then delivers a speech peppered with more or less successful jokes.

Although guests were greeted in front of the Hilton Hotel on Saturday evening by about a hundred demonstrators against the war in Gaza, the conflict was not the focus that evening.

This year, comedian Colin Jost, the author and actor of the American television show “Saturday Night Live” broadcast on NBC, made fun of the American president. His wife, actress Scarlett Johansson, also attended Saturday’s dinner.

“I’d like to point out that it’s past 10 p.m., Sleepy Joe is still awake, and Donald Trump has spent a week falling asleep in court every morning,” the comedian said, alluding to the former president’s New York City trial in the case. about hidden payments to a former porn actress.

Between self-deprecation and teasing the media, 81-year-old Joe Biden took the floor to ridicule his 77-year-old Republican rival, explaining that “age is the only thing we have in common.”

“Yes, age is a theme.”

However, Colin Jost and Joe Biden took a more serious tone when asked about the political climate in the United States. According to the US President, Donald Trump’s rhetoric poses a danger, especially after the storming of the Capitol in 2021, and, according to him, “the stakes could not be higher.”

“The 2024 election is in full swing, and yes, age matters,” Joe Biden said, before saying, “I’m a grown man running against a six-year-old.”

Meanwhile, outside, the demonstration continued. The protesters managed to display a Palestinian flag several meters long. The rest gathered below, at the level of the roadway, with signs or megaphones in their hands.

One of the groups organizing the demonstration in front of the Hilton, Code Pink, said it wanted to “stop” the dinner to protest the Biden administration’s “complicity in the attacks and murders of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli army,” saying the action would be “nonviolent.” For months now, every time the American president travels, demonstrators have gathered to protest Israel’s support for a man they call “Genocide Joe” and demand an end to the fighting in Gaza. In addition, several Palestinian journalists wrote an open letter to their American colleagues calling for a boycott of the highly popular event, which was the culmination of a whole weekend of social gatherings.

“You have a special responsibility to speak truth to the powerful and maintain journalistic integrity. It is unacceptable to remain silent out of fear or for career reasons when journalists in the Gaza Strip continue to be detained, tortured and killed for doing their jobs,” wrote about twenty Palestinian journalists.
