Abortion: Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish… artists blast Supreme Court decision

“This song is dedicated to Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh. We hate you,” Olivia Rodrigo said on stage at Glastonbury this Saturday before performing her famous song “Fuck You” with singer Lily Allen.

The song, which criticized some conservative British politicians upon its release, was updated by the American pop star and his British pal the day after the controversial recall of Roe vs. Wade Friday in the USA.

The deeply conservative Supreme Court on Friday effectively buried a decision that for nearly half a century guaranteed American women’s right to an abortion but was never adopted by the religious right. At the same time, several American states have already announced that they are taking measures to ban voluntary termination of pregnancy on their territory.

“Fuck America”

Enough to alarm many personalities from the world of American entertainment who have appeared on social networks and also on stage. “I’m horrified. So many women and girls are going to die because of this,” said Generation Z star Olivia Rodrigo on stage at Britain’s Glastonbury Festival.

Back on stage at Glastonbury on Friday, singer Billie Eilish also briefly criticized the Supreme Court on stage. “Today is a very, very dark day for women in America. “I’ll only say this because I can’t think about it anymore,” she misspoke, according to the BBC.

During the British festival, rock singer Phoebe Bridgers even performed a song in front of the public that was insulting to the Supreme Court, reports the specialized website Variety. “Fuck America. Let all these old fools who tell us what to do with our bodies go to hell,” she chanted.

Women’s rights are under threat

“It’s heartbreaking to see us here – that after so many decades of fighting for women’s rights to control their bodies, this Friday’s decision takes that away from us,” American singer Taylor Swift added on Twitter. while relaying a press release from former First Lady Michelle Obama also criticizing the decision.

Famous performer Mariah Carey said on Twitter that she was “disgusted” by the Supreme Court’s decision. “It’s unimaginable (…) to explain to my 11-year-old daughter why we live in a world where women’s rights are being destroyed before our eyes,” she reacted.

“Check on your friends, take care of yourself. We are all in this together and the fight has just begun. This is a very dark day for America.” for his part commented British singer Harry Styles.

Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of the American band Green Day, also announced from the stage of the London stadium his intention to settle in the United Kingdom and renounce his American citizenship. “There’s too much crap in the world to go back to this fucking miserable country. I’m not kidding, you will hear a lot about me in the coming days,” he assured during a concert given as part of the “Hella Mega” tour.

In addition to reports of dissatisfaction, some stars have taken it upon themselves to support women’s rights organizations, such as American singer Lizzo. “I will donate $500,000 from my next tour to Planned Parenthood (the US equivalent of Planned Parenthood)” and other abortion rights organizations, she announced. on Twitteradding that turner Live Nation will add $500,000 to the lot.

Rock band Rage Against the Machine also mobilized, pledging on Instagram to donate nearly $500,000 to reproductive rights groups in Wisconsin (where access to abortion may be under threat) and Illinois. “More than half the country will likely soon ban or severely restrict abortion, disproportionately affecting poor working-class communities as well as people of color and undocumented people,” the group decries on Instagram.
