The United States accuses Russia of using chemical weapons against Ukraine

He US Department of State announced this Thursday that it determined that Russia used chemical weapons with agents that constitute a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and will impose sanctions on those responsible.

The United States determined that Russia used chloropicrin, a pesticide used as an asphyxiating gas in the First World War and banned internationally, in Ukraine, to force troops out of fortified positions.

For this reason, the United States has imposed new sanctions on individuals and organizations related to this use of chemical weaponry.

“We have made this determination, in addition to our conclusion that Russia used riot control officers as a method of warfare in Ukraine, which is also a violation of the CWC,” the State Department said.

U.S considers that the use of this chemical weapon is not an isolated use and “is probably motivated by the desire of Russian forces to expel Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical advances on the battlefield”.

O Treasury Department and the State sanctioned two individuals, six Russian entities, and four companies associated with Russia’s chemical and biological weapons programs.

Chloropicrin is used as a lachrymatory agent, but it is banned in armed conflicts because in trench warfare you cannot escape its effects and it can cause suffocation.
