United Kingdom: several universities begin to set up pro-Palestine camps

Several British universities began to create pro-Palestinian camps to reject the war in Gaza stripbut organizers do not expect a repeat of the violence witnessed at protests in the United States, according to the so-called Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

The first university camp was set up last week in Warwick and later at campuses in Bristol, Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle, according to organizers.

The group’s campaign manager, Stella Swain, told the media this Thursday that this week and next, “more locals will accept this appeal for support. All protests so far have been completely peaceful and there is nothing to indicate that they won’t be. “There would be very little reason for a (police) response.”

He added that in the peaceful protests in UKStudents participated who addressed topics such as colonialism and described the demonstrations as “peaceful but educational events”.

Swain stressed that he hopes no politician, whether they support the cause or not, wants to see British police act as American police did toward student protesters.

At the University of Manchester, a camp was set up in the Brunswick Park area on Wednesday.

“You can be assured that we will do everything possible to keep things as usual and we urge protesters to act accordingly,” said a spokesperson for this educational institution.

“We are very aware of the need to ensure that everyone in our campus remain safe and protected and this will be of utmost importance”, he added.

In the United States, the student protests They are calling for an end to their universities’ cooperation with the Israeli Government and in cities such as Los Angeles, New York or Austin they have provoked altercations and arrests.
