Sabotage, cyber attacks, disinformation… How Russia maintains pressure on the West

Russia’s actions in Ukraine continue unabated, prompting Emmanuel Macron to repeat his comments about possibly sending troops to Ukrainian soil. However, Western concerns go beyond the purely military aspect and the Ukrainian landscape. In a statement Thursday, NATO countries said they were “deeply concerned about malign activities” by Moscow on their soil, as well as in Germany, the Czech Republic and Britain. According to NATO, these are “acts of sabotage, violence, cybercrime, electronic disruption, disinformation campaigns and other hybrid activities.”

In the latest episode, Germany and the Czech Republic this Friday accused Russian hackers from the Moscow-backed group APT28 (or Fancy Bear) of carrying out cyber attacks targeting government services or, in particular, government institutions. Several French government services were also hit by a major cyberattack, which was claimed by the pro-Russian hacker group Anonymous Sudan in March last year. “The Russians have been waging this hybrid war for many years,” explains Denis Kolesnik, a consultant specializing in security and defense issues in Central and Eastern Europe.
