War in Ukraine: Russia announces the capture of a new village in the East

The Russian army continues to strengthen its position in Ukraine. On Saturday, Moscow said it had captured a new village in the country’s east, near the town of Otcheretino, where rapid progress has been made in recent weeks. “Units of the Central Group of Forces, as a result of successful military operations, liberated the village of Arkhangelskoye (…),” says the daily report of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Russia has been building up its position in eastern Ukraine for months after regaining the initiative following the failure of a Ukrainian counteroffensive last summer and the capture of the fortified city of Avdiivka in February. Moscow’s troops took Ocheretino in early May and quickly advanced along this sector of the front, while elsewhere they struggled to break through Ukrainian defenses.

The Ukrainian General Staff, for its part, said on Saturday that Russian troops were “particularly active” in the area of the city of Pokrovsk, with six skirmishes taking place near the villages of Kalinovo, Yasnobrodovka and Sokol, south of the village of Pokrovsk. Russia claims Arkhangelskoye. Three civilians have been killed and two wounded in Russian attacks in the eastern region of Donetsk, where much of the fighting has been concentrated, over the past 24 hours, according to Ukrainian police.

“Pure terrorism”

The Russian army also launched an offensive in the Kharkov region in the northeast on May 10, capturing several population centers and forcing Ukraine to send valuable reinforcements there. Kyiv, however, said on Friday that Russian troops were “bogged down” in the area and that their advance had been “stopped.”

At least two people died Saturday in a Russian strike at a construction supplies hypermarket in this city, Ukraine’s second largest. Regional Governor Oleg Sinegubov also reported four casualties as a result of the strike. According to him, two guided bombs hit the hypermarket and 15 thousand square meters caught fire. “A large number of people are missing. There are many wounded. Apparently, the attack took place in a shopping center where there were a lot of people – this is pure terrorism,” said Mayor Igor Terekhov.

The governor of the Kharkov region earlier said that the Russian military hit the Kupyansk-Vuzly railway junction with a flying bomb, injuring at least five people.
