“We know what Putin is capable of”: in Estonia, civil defense is preparing for a Russian attack

The bush is moving. A man in a green helmet and military uniform appears and points down a dirt road. A car speeds through a forest near the town of Tostamaa in western Estonia. There, a small group of men and women move around trucks covered in artificial foliage. Faces disfigured by sleepless nights, blackened by days without a shower.

These members of the Defense League camped under the birch trees for five days. The exercise feels larger than life. And above all, you “need” to listen to the participants. With unwavering support from Ukraine, as well as its Prime Minister Kaia Kallas, whose very strong speeches earned her a wanted notice from Moscow, Estonia fears a Russian invasion more than ever. The small Baltic country, which shares more than 300 kilometers of border with Putin’s country, discovered on Thursday that Russian-disputed border buoys on the Narva River had been moved overnight. “An unacceptable provocation,” said French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejournet.
