India: Six babies die in fire at children’s hospital in New Delhi

A terrible drama in India’s second largest city. Six babies died in a fire that devastated a children’s hospital in New Delhi, police in the Indian capital said Sunday.

A dozen newborns were taken from the hospital during the disaster, but six of them were already dead when paramedics treated them, local police officer Surendra Choudhary said.

The day before, twenty-seven people, including four children, also died in a fire at an amusement park in the west of the country. All four children who died were under 12 years old, police said.

“Proceedings have been initiated against the hospital owner,” Mr. Choudhary said. He did not specify how the children died.

Oxygen tank explosion

The fire, which involved fourteen fire engines, broke out late Saturday night at the New Born Baby Care Hospital in New Delhi.

“The fire spread too quickly due to the explosion of an oxygen cylinder,” city fire chief Atul Garg told news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).

Speaking about the “heartbreaking” situation, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal warned that “whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared.”

“We all stand in solidarity with those who lost their innocent children in this disaster,” he added on social media.
