War in Ukraine: Spain pledges to provide one billion euros in military aid to Kyiv

From Mardrid, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the West to “use all means” to force Russia to peace, while Spain provides €1 billion in military aid from Madrid.

A security agreement has been concluded between the two countries. It “includes a commitment to provide one billion euros in military assistance for 2024, which will enable Ukraine to strengthen its defense capabilities” in the face of the Russian offensive, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said during a joint news conference with the Ukrainian president.

“We will be close to Ukraine as long as necessary,” he added, clarifying that Spain, in particular, will supply new Leopard tanks to Kyiv. This security agreement, according to the Spanish leader, is the tenth since the beginning of the war, signed by Ukraine, which has already signed an agreement with France, Germany and Great Britain. The military assistance provided by Madrid to Kyiv is still limited.

“Our soldiers are defending themselves against the Russian offensive, so we must intensify our joint work with our partners to achieve more: security and tangible coercion of Russia to peace by all means,” he said.

“We are asking the world to help us by providing at least seven additional Patriot systems. We need at least two systems for Kharkov,” the country’s second city, located about forty kilometers from the Russian border and which has been subject to Russian strikes in recent months, Volodymyr Zelensky added. In his opinion, “there are enough such systems in the world (Patriot),” but countries that have them often hesitate to supply them, “fearing” that Kyiv will use them to intercept targets inside Russia.

Spain has so far pledged €330 million in military aid to Kyiv, making it a small contributor on a European scale, according to the Kiel Institute, which lists weapons promised and delivered to Ukraine since the Russian invasion that began on February 24, 2022.
