Russian Ambassador to Venezuela describes the extradition of Alex Saab to the United States as “kidnapping”.

The ambassador of Russia on Venezuela, Sergey Mélik-Bagdasárov, described this Monday the extradition to the United States of the Colombian businessman as “kidnapping” Alex Saab, alleged front man of President Nicolás Maduro, who became effective on Saturday, after more than a year in detention in Cape Verde.

“Our energetic and resounding protest to the kidnapping of the Alex Saab, special envoy of the president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro ”, wrote on Twitter the representative of Russia on Venezuela.

The Colombian businessman was arrested on June 12, 2020 in Cape Verde under an arrest warrant issued through Interpol by the United States and was extradited to the North American country on Saturday.

Saab He is charged with seven counts of laundering and one more of conspiracy to launder and, in addition, since May 2019, he has been sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury.

With his message, the Russian ambassador shared a post from Mature in which he mentioned the dialogue that was taking place in Mexico between his Government and the opposition – in which the Russian Federation is one of the accompanying nations – and recalled that, in response to the extradition, the presidential commission withdrew from the talks.

After knowing the news of the extradition of Saab, the Government of Venezuela interrupted the dialogue that had been taking place since last August 13 and whose fourth session was to start this Sunday in the Mexican capital.

The announcement of the suspension was made on Saturday by the president of the Legislative Assembly and head of the official delegation for dialogue, Jorge Rodríguez, who blamed the United States, Colombia and the opposition for this situation.

“Our delegation announces that it suspends its participation in the negotiation and dialogue table; Consequently, we will not attend the round that was to begin tomorrow, October 17, in Mexico City as a profound expression of our protest against the brutal aggression against the person and the inauguration of our delegate Álex Saab ”, said Rodríguez.
