Australia has applied a strict policy of border closure since March 2020 with the aim of curbing the pandemic and that included a ban on the population from traveling abroad.

Interior Minister Karen Andrews said in a statement that authorities plan to further relax restrictions as the number of fully vaccinated increases and gradually begin receiving fully vaccinated foreign skilled workers and international students.

The progressive reopening of international borders, which does not yet include tourists, occurs under a national plan based on the immunization of 80 percent of Australia’s target population, where the different regions that make up the country advance to different speeds.

According to official forecasts, only the states of New South Wales and Victoria, which account for more than 40 percent of Australia’s population, and the Capital Territory will exceed the 80 percent immunization target by that date.

Therefore, for the moment, trips abroad can only be made from Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra and upon return those vaccinated with the full schedule should not be quarantined.

Australia, which maintains a travel bubble with New Zealand without quarantine for people with full doses of the drug, will launch another air corridor with Singapore on November 8 without isolation period on the way or return for travelers vaccinated with the complete guideline.

The oceanic country, which has vaccinated 74% of the target population with the complete guideline, has accumulated more than 162,000 COVID-19 infections and more than 1,650 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
