France: bishops to sell “assets” of the Catholic Church to compensate victims of sexual abuse

The French bishops will sell “goods” of their dioceses or resort to a loan to compensate the victims of pedophilia within the Church, thus ruling out using donations from the faithful, the president of the Episcopal Conference announced on Monday.

This decision, announced by Eric de Moulins-Beaufort after an annual meeting in the French town of Lourdes (south), responds to one of the proposals of the independent commission that estimated in more than 216,000 cases of sexual assault on minors by religious or priests since 1950.
