Capitol assault: man who beat cop receives longest prison sentence

A man who beat a policeman during the assault on the United States Congress On January 6, he was sentenced this Wednesday to 3 years and 5 months in prison, the highest sentence ordered so far against one of the defendants for that event.

The condemned Scott Fairlamb, from New Jersey, is the first person convicted of assaulting a police officer during the assault on Capitol by supporters of former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021).

During the reading of the sentence, Judge Royce Lamberth, of a federal court of the District of Columbia, described as “Affront to society and the law” the actions of Fairlamb, gym owner and ex-mixed martial arts fighter.

The condemned man appears in several videos recorded on January 6 shouting slogans in favor of the assault on Capitol, climbing the bleachers that were being installed at the time for the presidential inauguration of Democrat Joe Biden and punching a policeman.

In addition, appears going in and out of the Capitol building, according to judicial writings and the videos shown in court.

Fairlamb pleaded guilty in August to assaulting a police officer and obstructing official proceedings., in reference to the session of Congress that was held on January 6 to ratify the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential elections of November 2020 against Trump and that was interrupted for a few hours.

The defendant asked for “clemency” on Wednesday and affirmed between sobs in court that he “truly” regrets his actions that day and that he has regrets.

The sentence against Fairlamb can establish a precedent in the cases of other defendants by the assault on the Capitol thatwho committed acts of violence.

Of the 126 defendants who have pleaded guilty so far, only 16 have admitted serious crimes.

So far only three people have been convicted, Fairlamb himself and two other individuals who have received sentences of eight and fourteen months, but were not charged for having assaulted any agent.
