Unvaccinated MPs will be suspended

A first in the European Union. In Latvia, MPs who are not vaccinated against the coronavirus will no longer be able to participate in debates, vote or even receive their salary, after the adoption of a law by the Latvian Parliament, according to Le Figaro which quotes the Dutch press agency BNO News.

This decision, voted by 62 deputies out of 100, also concerns members of municipal councils, according to BNO News. Nine members of parliament would be affected, says the Dutch press organ.

Delay in vaccination

According to the law passed by the Latvian parliament, this measure, which is due to enter into force on Monday and at least until July 2022, will be reviewed every two months. A new containment was put in place in mid-October in Latvia to cope with the increase in coronavirus cases.

Shops are closed, gatherings and cultural and sporting events are prohibited. With 58.1% of its population fully vaccinated, Latvia is the least developed country in Europe on vaccination.
