Identified 41 of the 68 inmates murdered in a jail in Ecuador

The Secretariat for Human Rights of Ecuador reported the identification, until Sunday afternoon, of 41 of the 68 inmates killed on Saturday in a massacre in the penitentiary of the coastal city of Guayaquil.

“We continue working from the Criminalistics Unit, so far 41 deceased persons deprived of liberty have been recognized and 15 bodies have been delivered to their relatives”, he indicated on Twitter.

It also reported that they have treated 76 relatives of some of the murdered inmates, in the second most serious massacre in the penitentiary after the one that occurred last September, when 118 inmates died due to disputes that the authorities attribute to gangs linked to drug trafficking.

According to Colonel Marco Ortiz, national director of technical scientific investigation of the Police, only 61 bodies could be raised from the jail.

The state of the bodies is varied, he said, as some were burned and mutilated in the middle of the clashes, which is why they have only been able to take fingerprints of 45 of the 61 bodies.

The rest of the corpses must be carried out “anthropological identification and, if necessary, a genetic identification. That obviously takes longer, ”Ortiz added.

The Ecuavisa television channel presented this Sunday images of the state in which Pavilion 2 was left, which was attacked by other inmates.

The images showed large holes in several walls through which the inmates tried to enter to attack those in pavilion 2, which had been left without its leader, who had recently been released after having served 60% of his sentence, according to the authorities. .
