In hospitals there are currently 2,787 patients from covid, 498 of which are seriously ill cared for in the ucis.

Experts attribute the situation to the relatively low immunization rate – 66% -, the fall in immune protection after a certain time after the administration of a vaccine and the aggressiveness of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2.

With the measure of partial confinement for the unvaccinated, the Austrian Government, made up of conservatives and environmentalists, aims not only to stop the spread of the virus, but above all to encourage people to get a vaccine.

But many scientists, doctors and politicians consider it insufficient to stop the rapid rate of spread of the disease at this time, and they call for stronger measures, such as restricting contacts and movement of the entire population and even making vaccination mandatory.

For now, the Ministry of Health confirmed yesterday that it is preparing a bill to introduce the mandatory nature of the vaccine against covid for healthcare personnel.

The most affected regions, which are the federal states of Upper Austria and Salzburg, both adjacent to German Bavaria, announced today that they will impose a confinement to the entire population from next Monday, without announcing the details of it yet.

“If there is no lockdown at the national level, Upper Austria and Salzburg will go into lockdown from next week,” said the governor of Upper Austria, the Christian Democrat Thomas Stelzer, in the parliament of his region.

“We have very, very little room for maneuver,” warned the politician after underlining the urgency of “protecting lives” and the health service.
