Russia records third consecutive record of deaths from coronavirus with 1,254 deaths in one day

Russia reported 1,254 deaths this Friday due to coronavirus covid-19, a new daily maximum of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic for the third day in a row, health authorities reported.

The highest number of deaths was registered in Moscow (95), followed by Saint Petersburg (77) and the Krasnodar region (69).

Since the beginning of the pandemic in Russia 261,589 people have died in Russia due to the coronavirus, although the official statistics on excess deaths in the same period almost double this figure.

In addition, 37,156 new cases of covid-19 were registered throughout the country in the last 24 hours, almost 200 less than yesterday. In this way, Russia has already had less than 40,000 daily infections for a week.

In Moscow, the main focus of the pandemic in Russia, 3,371 new infections were detected, compared to 4,062 reported the previous day.

According to the Moscow deputy mayor, Anastasia Rákova, in the Russian capital the occupation of hospital beds has dropped by 50% due to an improvement in the epidemic situation.

In total, the country accumulates as of today 9,257,068 cases of coronavirus and it is the fifth country in the world after the United States, India, Brazil and the United Kingdom by the number of documented infections.

The Russian authorities attribute the sharp increase in new infections and deaths to the aggressiveness of the delta variant, the lack of strict compliance with sanitary rules by many Russians and, above all, to the low vaccination rate in the country.

According to official data from last Friday, in the nation that was a pioneer in registering its own anticovid vaccine, only 57,961,578 citizens have received the complete vaccination schedule, which places herd immunity at only 49% of the 80 % to which the authorities aspire.
