Shipwreck in the English Channel: 31 migrants die trying to reach the United Kingdom from France

About thirty immigrants died this Wednesday in the English Channel for the wreck of their boat while trying to reach the United Kingdom from the French coast, which is the worst recent tragedy in the area and has led France to say that all of Europe is in mourning.

Among the 31 dead were five women and a girl, said the French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, who added that two people managed to be rescued “in a heroic way” by the forces of order and four alleged traffickers have been arrested.

The rescue operation was activated after a fishing boat alerted that it had sighted “Several castaways” in the waters of estrecho of Pas de Calais, as explained by the local Maritime Prefecture in a statement.

Since the beginning of the year, according to their figures, and thanks to the mobilization of 600 policemen and gendarmes, 44 networks have been dismantled and 1,552 people involved in this migrant smuggling have been arrested.

Despite this, there have been 47,000 attempts at clandestine sea crossings to the United Kingdom since then. The forces of order have rescued 7,800 migrants in that time, Macron added in his statement, where he stressed that Europe “is in mourning” over what happened today.

In addition to the deployment that France will carry out to reinforce border controls, the French authorities point out that action must be taken at the community level.

“I ask my European counterparts to immediately reinforce the Frontex agency’s resources at the Union’s external borders and for an emergency meeting of the European ministers involved in the migration challenge”, said the head of state.

The Executive will hold a ministerial meeting this Thursday to address what happened and the fight against clandestine immigration in the area, in which the Interior, Justice, Transportation and Foreign officials will participate, among others.
