Spectators return in person mode to the Thanksgiving Day parade in New York | PHOTOS

People lined the streets of Manhattan, New York again Thursday for Macy’s 95th Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, after last year’s show was scaled down and closed to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic. .

Other cities in the United States hold parades, but the New York parade is already part of the Christmas tradition and is televised nationwide to about 50 million viewers before their Thanksgiving meals, according to Macy’s.

Giant helium-inflated balloons depicting cartoon characters and toys are often the main attraction, and this year’s parade added newcomers like Grogu – also known as Baby Yoda in the “The Mandalorian” series of “Star Wars.” , and Ada, the young scientist from the Netflix series “Ada Twist, Scientist.”

The classic astronaut Snoopy appeared once again in this year’s parade, the ninth balloon version of the celebrated animated character, according to the Macy’s website.

In all, there were 15 balloons led by roped protesters, the longest of which was 22 meters, according to Macy’s.

On the ground, between marching bands and dancers, 28 floats made the 2.5-mile route from Central Park West to the Macy’s store on 34th Street, with crowd favorites like the Sesame Street Muppets, Miss America and the band from rock Foreigner.

While it is strictly a television event for most of the country, in New York it is one of the largest annual gatherings along with New Years Eve, St. Patrick’s Day and the LGBTQ Pride parade.

The NYPD does not give estimates of the crowds, but organizers say millions of viewers turn out in person.

Like balloons, those numbers may be inflated, considering the entire population of Manhattan is 1.6 million, in a city of 8.4 million.
