Portugal imposes a week of confinement after Christmas to stop the increase in coronavirus infections

Portugal, a country with one of the vaccination rates against the COVID-19 highest in the world, announced on Thursday measures to curb the increase in infections by covid-19, including a week of restrictions after the end of the year holidays.

“We are seeing a worsening of the health situation”, Prime Minister António Costa declared during a press conference after a council of ministers.

“It is the right time to adopt new measures” because “We are entering a phase of high risk”, stressed.

As of December 1, the government recommends teleworking, the mask will once again be mandatory indoors and the health pass will be required in restaurants and hotels.

In addition, a negative test will be required when covid to attend cultural or sporting events, visit old people’s homes, or go to bars and discos.

Regarding travel, a negative result will be required for all flights to destination Portugal.

After the end of the year parties, from January 2 to 9, teleworking will become mandatory, school holidays will be long and bars and discos will have to close.

Despite having 87% of its population fully vaccinated, Portugal is experiencing a sharp increase in covid-19 infections.

On Thursday, the country registered 3,150 new cases in 24 hours, according to the latest report from health authorities, the highest level in almost four months.
