Ómicron: Japan detects the first contagion with the new variant in a traveler from Namibia

The government of Japan announced today the detection of the first case of contagion by omicron variant of the coronavirus in its territory, in a person who came to the country from Namibia.

The patient came to Japan on the 28th and was subjected to a PCR test like all the people who enter the Asian country, which tested positive for coronavirus later identified as corresponding to the omicron strain in a genetic analysis of the pathogen, according to the Executive.

This is “the first time that a contagion by (the variant) omicron has been confirmed in Japan,” according to Hirozaku Matsuno, spokesman for the Executive, at a press conference on Tuesday.

The patient, in his 30s, suffers from fever and is hospitalized and in isolation, said the spokesman, adding that the detection of the contagion “demonstrates the effectiveness of border prevention measures” applied by Japan against the virus.

The first positive for the new variant of the virus has been released in Japan the same day that the new border restrictions in the country came into force, applied by the Executive to try to prevent precisely the spread of the omicron strain in its territory .

Since this Tuesday, Japan prohibits the entry into its territory of all foreign travelers from other countries, so that only Japanese citizens and foreigners already settled in the country who have traveled abroad and return can access its territory.

These new restrictions reverse the flexibility that began to be applied three weeks ago, and that allowed business travelers, students and other people with short and medium-term visas to enter the country, which have again been suspended.

The Japanese authorities are analyzing people who may have been in contact with the infected person to try to detect other possible infections, according to the spokesman, who avoided giving more details of the case.
