Ómicron: The United States detects the new variant of the coronavirus in 5 states and suspects there is in more

USA has detected confirmed cases of the omicron variant of coronavirus in California, Minnesota, Colorado, Hawaii and New York, and suspects that there are in more parts of the country, reported this Friday the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, in English), Rochelle Walensky.

The health officer indicated at the press conference of the White House pandemic working group that they are working “closely” with local health authorities to investigate suspected cases in other states.

Last Wednesday, the US confirmed the first case in its territory of the variant omicron, which was detected in California.

Walensky stressed that the country “is equipped and prepared” to combat the new variant of the virus, in addition to stressing that the CDC continuously monitors the effectiveness of omicron vaccines.

Also, “we are doing a thorough investigation on the first cases of omicron to understand the contagion and severity of the disease with omicron,” said the director of the CDC.

Despite the alarm over this variant, first detected last week in South Africa, Walensky said that 99.9% of infections in the US today are caused by the delta mutation of the coronavirus.

“Delta continues to drive cases across the country, especially in those who are not vaccinated,” he pointed.

US President Joe Biden on Thursday outlined a strategy to contain the pandemic this winter and minimize the impact of omicron, hoping not to disrupt the economy or tourism too much.

Biden’s plan includes a measure that will take effect on Monday and by which all travelers arriving in the United States must present a negative test for coronavirus in the 24 hours prior to their flight, instead of the 72 hours that were required until now.

This measure will apply to all travelers, regardless of their nationality, vaccination status or country of departure, and for the moment they will not be required to quarantine these people, although the White House has not ruled out strengthening its measures if concern about the omicron variant.
