Opposition launches another candidate for a repeat election in Barinas, the home state of Hugo Chávez

The opposition Venezuelan announced this Monday that it will launch until now councilor Sergio Garrido as a candidate for the Governor of Barinas, birthplace of the late President Hugo Chávez (1999-2013), where the regional elections will be repeated after an order from the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).

“We have decided then, for the figure of Sergio Garrido”said the opponent Freddy Superlano, who was a candidate for the Governor of Barinas in the regional elections on November 21 and in which he won, but whose proclamation was suspended due to a disqualification that he and the electoral body were unaware of.

  • Former Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza will be a candidate for elections in the state of Hugo Chávez

Garrido, who was elected as a legislator by list vote to the legislative council of Barinas in the local elections, also held on November 21, is presented by the opposition as a candidate for the Interior after the Comptroller’s Office disqualified two of his possible options , Superlano’s wife, Aurora Silva, and former congressman Julio César Reyes.

“So, we are going to go with a person who is already recognized by the National Electoral Council, who has already been proclaimed, who has already met to see also if they are capable (…) of also telling the world that this is also disabled” , Superlano explained.

And added that, if so, “Practically what the dictatorship wants is for us to ask them who they want our candidate to be.”

Superlano also indicated that, due to the panorama of disqualifications, they also have other possible candidates for the Interior, but that their names would not be revealed to avoid being prevented from participating.

“Sergio is the general secretary of (party) Democratic Action (AD) in the state of Barinas, he has been a councilor on other occasions and now a regional deputy”, he remarked.

On November 29, the Supreme Court ordered the repetition of the elections in Barinas after receiving a constitutional protection action filed by Adolfo Superlano, considered a dissident of the opposition, alleging a violation of constitutional rights, among other things, because Freddy Superlano presented despite being disabled.

The decision was known after more than a week of delay in the electoral results in that state, where Freddy Superlano obtained a percentage of votes in favor with 37.60%, compared to 37.21% obtained by the official candidate Argenis Chávez .
