Lula travels to Argentina to meet with Alberto Fernández and receive an award

The ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, which the polls indicate as a favorite to win the presidential elections of Brazil In 2022, he will travel to Buenos Aires this week to meet with the Argentine president on Friday, Alberto Fernandez, from whom he will receive an award, informed his advice.

The meeting between the Brazilian socialist leader and the head of state of Argentina will take place a few days before the possible meeting that Fernández will have with the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, in the framework of the Mercosur summit on December 16 in Brasilia and that It would be the first meeting between the two leaders.

Until now, the far-right Brazilian leader had refused to meet with Fernández, and even abstained from attending his inauguration, due to the Argentine’s closeness to Lula, his main political rival and whom he may face in the October elections of next anus.

Lula will meet in Argentina with President Fernández, receive an award and participate in an act for democracy, the Workers’ Party (PT), the formation led by the former union leader, reported in a statement.

“The former president will receive the Azucena Villaflor Award on Friday, which the Government of Argentina grants to human rights defenders. Lula will also be honored for his fight against lawfare, the abuse of Justice to achieve political and illegitimate ends, ”according to the PT note.

According to the statement, the award ceremony will be led by Fernández, “with whom Lula meets at the Casa Rosada” in the first act of “his official agenda for his visit to Argentina.”

According to the PT, Lula will also participate in Buenos Aires, together with Alberto Fernández and his vice president, Cristina Fernández, in a cultural event in the Plaza de Mayo to commemorate 38 years of democracy in Argentina and Human Rights Day.

On Saturday, according to his agenda, the Brazilian socialist leader will meet with leaders of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and the Central de Trabajadores Argentinos (CTA) and will participate in an act in tribute to the union movement.

The meeting between Lula and Fernández comes two weeks after Bolsonaro described as a “provocation” the fact that the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, had received the former Brazilian president in Paris.

“It seems to be a provocation. Could it be that he (because of Macron) and his intelligence services don’t know who Lula was here?

Lula made a tour of Europe in November that took him to Germany, Belgium, France and Spain, where he was received by various authorities, the European Parliament, as well as by Macron and also by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez.

In recent months, at the same time that the figure of Lula has grown in the polls for the October 2022 elections, Bolsonaro has dedicated a good part of his speeches to disqualifying the former president, who in turn maintains a hard line of criticism of the Government of the leader of the extreme right.
