“He filled us with love”: a deaf couple expresses their emotion after adopting a child with a disability

A deaf couple from Neuquén, Argentina, managed to get the adoption of a 6-year-old boy after the ruling of the judge No. 1 of Gral. Roca, Moira Revsin, which is considered a “challenge” to the traditional model that has been in force in the country for several years, reported the local media this Thursday.

According to Infobae, Jorge and Claudio obtained the custody of the minor since they discovered more than 10 years ago their desire to be parents and, in addition, discover through the media that the infant suffered health problems, poor speech development and poor motor skills in her legs and one of her arms.

“I feel like he’s magical”says one of his parents. And add: “Life has really filled us with love and now we are happy for the child we have”.

The little boy was living in a public home from birth to 4 years with other boys after meeting the requirements to be placed for adoption. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the child was with “a supportive family” made up of a mother and her three children.

In 2019, Unique Registry of Aspiring Guardians for Adoption Purposes of Río Negro (RUAGFA) started a campaign to find potential adopters, but the search yielded “Negative results” and the authorities had no choice but to make a public summons through the media.

Enter the applicants were Jorge and Claudio, who arrived with a deaf interpreter: “The fact of not being able to hear was not a limitation for raising a child”they pointed out.

With the support of psychologists, social workers, psychopedagogues and the official defender Ana María Streidenberger, the child’s adoption had taken a concrete course. The judge Moira Revsin determined that the two men could take care of the child “For their life experiences”.

“They were two people who understood very well what it meant to live in a society that is often hostile to people who are not of average standards”, said.

“(These parents) have very oiled mechanisms to eliminate those barriers that society has raised. We note that they not only empathize with the child’s situation, but also understand it and are great teachers to teach him how to live fully “, wrote the magistrate.

About the ruling, Revsin highlights “The importance of the recognition of the rights of all people, regardless of their circumstances, their health problems, their social, cultural, economic, gender or sexual choice, since we are all people with rights”.
