The United States congratulates Gabriel Boric and hopes to continue working with Chile for security

The government of U.S congratulated the leftist on Monday Gabriel Boric for his victory in the presidential elections in Chile and said he hopes to continue working with the new government to promote the “shared goals” of democracy, prosperity and security.

In a message on Twitter, the US Secretary of State, Antony BlinkHe also assured that the Chilean people “once again set an example” with the holding of free and fair democratic elections.

Boric, a 35-year-old former student leader, won this Sunday in the second round of the presidential elections by getting 55.8% of the votes, with more than 10 percentage points of difference with respect to his rival, the far-right José Antonio Kast.

Among the main challenges for the future Chilean government will be to channel the social crisis that continues to exist since the 2019 protests, lead the implementation of the norms of the new Constitution and face the economic challenges left by the pandemic.
