Maduro affirms that 87% of the population is vaccinated against COVID-19

The president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, announced this Monday that 87% of the Venezuelan population has already been vaccinated against COVID-19 and that the goal is to reach 90% of those immunized on December 31, a figure that corresponds to people inoculated with a single dose.

Although the president never differentiates citizens with a single injection or with the two necessary to consider themselves immunized, on December 16, the Vice Minister of Technology and Regulation of the Ministry of Health, Gerardo Briceño, revealed that, then, 55% of Venezuelans had received both doses, while 82% had only one.

That was the last time that a government official provided complete information, since, subsequently, both the president and his ministers continued to provide general data without specifying or differentiating percentages of the population with a half pattern from the complete one.

To this day, it is unknown how many Venezuelans are immunized, that is, inoculated with the two doses.

“We have reached 87% of vaccinated in Venezuela, the goal is December 31 90%. It is very important that they go to get vaccinated, health first, “said Maduro in an immunization report broadcast by the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).

Maduro pointed out that the regions of the country with the highest inoculation rate are Caracas, Táchira, La Guaira, Carabobo, Miranda, Lara, Mérida, Guárico, Cojedes, Trujillo, Aragua, Yaracuy, Nueva Esparta and Falcón, although he did not offer percentages.

On the other hand, he indicated that today two other cases of the omicron variant were detected in the country, coming from the United Kingdom and Panama.

Last week, the president confirmed the first 7 cases of this variant in the Caribbean nation, although he assured that all patients are asymptomatic.

“Venezuela today reached 6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, thanks to the fact that we collectively take care of ourselves, thanks to vaccination, thanks to the superior and collective conscience of the Venezuelan family,” he added.

Maduro called on citizens to go to get vaccinated to prevent the omicron variant from becoming “dominant” in the country.

“We are finishing this year well, starting well and developing all of 2022 with the country open, the country working, working, commerce alive, tourism alive, all alive and all that is guaranteed by vaccination,” he said.

According to the latest report from the Executive, given on Sunday night, Venezuela accumulates, since the pandemic began, 443,332 cases confirmed by the authorities, which also registered 5,314 deaths from covid-19.

The president announced on December 23 that Venezuela will begin the booster vaccination on January 3, with the drugs Sputnik Light, Abdala and “the Chinese vaccine.”
