The world is approaching the record number of one million daily cases of coronavirus

The rise of the omicron variant has caused that for four consecutive days the barrier of 900,000 global cases of coronavirus per day, a figure not reached in any previous wave, and could soon exceed one million infections a day, according to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The daily case charts updated by the WHO show that on December 24, 962,000 cases were registered in the world, a record number, and between December 22 and 25 the barrier of 900,000 cases was surpassed.

Until the arrival of the omicron variant, the highest number of daily cases had been registered on April 23, in full wave of the delta strain in regions such as South Asia, when 894,000 new infections were recorded in the world.

Despite the high numbers of positives, the number of deaths per day remains stable, with figures that have not changed since the beginning of October and range between 4,000 and 8,000 deaths per day worldwide.

The cases of COVID-19 in the world increased 11% last week, although the deaths globally fell 4%, which seems to indicate a lower severity of many of the cases of the omicron variant.
