At least 65 dead in accidents on Brazil’s roads in the New Year

At least 65 people died and another 1,017 were injured in accidents in the brazilian roads on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve, according to the official report released this Monday by the road authorities.

According to the bulletin of the Highway Police, the number of fatalities in traffic accidents was similar to last year, when 62 people died (+ 4.83%).

The number of injured, meanwhile, also registered an increase of 3.45% compared to the 983 that occurred between New Years Eve 2020 and New Years 2021.

However, accidents presented a reduction of 4%, with 730 cases, while those of a serious nature, with fatalities or hospitalized, fell by 9%, to 187 incidents.

In total, highway police intercepted 37,169 vehicles with irregularities, of which 5,344 were fined for dangerously overtaking and 4,240 for lack of occupants’ seat belts.

Almost 1,000 (964) drivers were fined and their vehicles immobilized for driving while intoxicated and 597 motorcyclists for lack of helmets.

During the checkpoints, the authorities also seized 756 kilograms of marijuana, 442 people were arrested and 83 stolen vehicles recovered.
