New attack on the international coalition

Five rockets were fired on Wednesday at an Iraqi base housing forces of the international anti-jihadist coalition in western Iraq, the third such attack in days.

No victim

The attacks come as Iran and several allied groups in the region mark the second anniversary of the deaths of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and his Iraqi lieutenant Abu Mehdi al-Mouhandis, killed by US drone fire in Iraq on January 3. 2020.

On Wednesday, the projectiles fell two kilometers from the Iraqi base of Ain al-Assad, in the desert of Al-Anbar province, according to a coalition official speaking on condition of anonymity.

“No damage, no casualties, it was (rocket fire),” he added. “We observed five shots, which fell outside” the base. This same base was targeted Tuesday by two trapped drones, shot down without causing any casualties, according to a coalition official.

Two drones targeted an American diplomatic center

On Monday, the US military shot down two trapped drones targeting an American diplomatic center in the grounds of Baghdad international airport, where coalition troops are notably stationed. This attack was carried out on the road to Baghdad International Airport.

In recent months, dozens of rocket attacks or drone bomb attacks have targeted American troops and interests in Iraq.

Never claimed, these attacks are systematically blamed by the United States on the pro-Iran Iraqi factions, which have constantly demanded the departure of all American troops stationed in Iraq as part of the coalition led by Washington to fight against the Islamic State group.
