Ómicron cancels flights in Colombia: how airlines have reacted

Due to the advance of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, several scheduled flights were canceled in the United States, the same scenario has been occurring in Colombia, which has already given the first suspensions, generating uncertainty in the airlines.

AIRLINES AFFECTED BY THE OMICRON

Seven flights had to cancel the airline Latam Colombia, which were determined for six in the afternoon due to the impact of this variant on part of its crew.

This rise in infections so far, impacts 3.6% of operations, the company said. To date, 93% of Latam employees in the country have a complete vaccination scheme.

Latam Colombia, had to return the ticket money to those affected without penalties or change of date without a fine, among other measures applied.

Another affected company is Viva Air, which with 98% of its employees vaccinated, the low-cost airline indicated that some members of the crew “have been affected” and therefore have “rescheduled some of their flights.”

On the other hand, Avianca reports that they are monitoring the situation, in addition to implementing measures in favor of users and staff. Despite this, they were forced to cancel flights in advance from January 1 to 15, mainly domestic in Colombia, corresponding to 4% of the total operation.

Likewise, the director of the Aerocivil, Jair Orlando Fajardo, said that the air sector “is taking great care” and that it is working “with the Ministry of Health in special protocols seeking the protection of users, crews and the air terminal.”

Fajardo added that “although we have a large percentage of vaccination, we must continue to take care of ourselves.”
