Costa Rica imposes new restrictions due to the increase in coronavirus cases

The government of Costa Rica imposed new restrictions due to the rapid increase in cases of covid-19 in recent weeks, which include suspension of certain mass events, public ban on others and vehicular curfew.

“The Government announced the need for quick and concrete actions to face the challenge of the speed of contagion of the variant (omicron), which has made spikes in European and North American countries up to five times higher”Says a government statement.

The new restrictive measures will run from Tuesday, January 11 to Sunday, January 23 and include the closure of movie theaters, theaters, academic activities and places of worship, and the banning of the public at cultural and sporting events.

It was also decided that no private vehicle will be able to circulate in the country between 10 at night to 5 in the morning.

The Costa Rican government reacts with these measures after only 11,999 infections were registered in the first seven days of 2022, practically the same number accumulated during the months of November and December, when 12,200 positive cases were reported.

Other previous measures such as the 50% capacity for restaurants and bars will remain in force, along with the new restrictions.

According to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), the country could reach 5,000 cases a day this week, doubling the highest levels of cases per day reached during the entire pandemic.

The authorities urged the 320,000 people who have not yet received even the first dose against covid-19 to go to the vaccination centers.

According to data from the CCSS, approximately 69% of the population (of 5 million inhabitants) already have both doses, 77% have one and 8% have three.

Precisely, on Monday the inoculation process was opened for children between the ages of five and 11, a population group that had not had access to the vaccine since it arrived in the country in December 2020.

“This is a moment of happiness and hope for parents who have sons and daughters between the ages of five and 11 (…). This is one more step on the way out of the pandemic because it expands the protected Costa Rican population “said President Carlos Alvarado.
