The more than 44,000 infections represent the highest number of cases, in addition to the fact that on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 33,626, 44,187 and 43,523 cases were reported, respectively.

Despite these figures, Mexico remains the sixteenth country in the world in the number of confirmed infections and is the fifth with the most deaths from this cause, behind the United States, Brazil, India and Russia, according to the University’s count. Johns Hopkins.

The health authorities recognize that, based on death certificates, the country may be close to 451,000 deaths and estimate that Mexico actually accumulates 4,547,861 infections.

Of the number of confirmed cases, there are 301,107 active ones, who have presented symptoms during the last 14 days and account for 6.4% of the total.

In addition, since the start of the pandemic, 3,396,946 people have recovered.

The average occupancy of general beds in Mexican hospitals stands at 28% and the use of intensive care beds at 16%.

Just on Tuesday, the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, in charge of managing the pandemic in Mexico, asked people who have been in contact with a positive covid-19 not to take a test and limit themselves to isolation.

“Getting tested is not going to change our decision to isolate ourselves to protect other people from getting infected, instead of running to the kiosk to get a test, what you have to do is stay home,” the official said.

In recent days, long lines of people have been seen in Mexico seeking -sometimes unsuccessfully- to take a test in public and private centers.

Unlike other countries, Mexico spent Christmas holidays without restrictions due to the pandemic. And despite the rise in infections, the Mexican government has defended its management of the health crisis and has ruled out a fourth wave of covid-19.

Regarding deaths, Mexico City, the focus of the pandemic, accumulates about 18% of all deaths nationwide.

VACCINATION PLAN

The authorities also indicated that within the vaccination program 154.61 million doses have been administered, adding 937,885 during the last day.

The Government of Mexico affirms that it is the seventh country that has applied the most doses in absolute numbers.

Of its 126 million inhabitants, 82.73 million in the country have at least one dose of the vaccine.

Meanwhile, 75.06 million have completed their vaccination schedule.

Since the end of December 2020, 201.3 million vaccine doses have arrived in Mexico from the American Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna, the British AstraZeneca, the Russian Sputnik V and the Chinese CanSino and Sinovac.

In addition, the Mexican government said last week that it hopes to have the Cuban Abdala vaccine against covid-19 in the second quarter of 2022 and it would be considered as a booster dose.
