Mexico registers 20,872 cases of coronavirus and 98 deaths from coronavirus

Mexico registered this Sunday 20,872 new infections of the COVID-19 to reach a total of 4,667,829 cases, in addition to 98 deaths to total 303,183 deaths, reported the Ministry of Health.

In the last week, Mexico has reported its highest numbers of infections, with a historical record of 60,552 on Wednesday and 51,368 on Saturday, in addition to daily deaths above 300.

With these figures, Mexico is the fourteenth country in the world in number of confirmed infections and is the fifth with the most deaths from this cause, behind the United States, Brazil, India and Russia, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.

The health authorities recognize that, based on death certificates, the country may be close to 455,000 deaths and estimate that Mexico actually accumulates 4,919,101 infections.

Of this amount, there are 338,056 active cases, which have presented symptoms during the last 14 days and account for more than 7% of the total.

In addition, since the start of the pandemic, 3,704,448 people have recovered.

The average occupancy of general beds in Mexican hospitals stands at 41% and that of intensive care at 25%.

This despite the fact that the person in charge of managing the pandemic in the country, Hugo López-Gatell, argued on Tuesday that the cases of covid-19 caused by the omicron variant in Mexico are 10 times higher than hospitalizations and deaths.

Unlike other countries, Mexico spent Christmas holidays without restrictions due to the pandemic. And despite the rise in infections, the Mexican government has defended its management of the health crisis.

Regarding deaths, Mexico City, the focus of the pandemic, accumulates about 18% of all deaths nationwide.

Starting next Monday and until February 6, 12 of the 32 states in the country will be at a green epidemiological risk traffic light (low risk of contagion), 10 in yellow (medium risk), including Mexico City; nine in orange (high risk) and one in red, Aguascalientes, for maximum risk.

VACCINATION PLAN

The authorities also indicated that within the vaccination program 160.48 million doses have been administered, adding 606,953 during the last day.

The Government of Mexico affirms that it is the seventh country that has applied the most doses in absolute numbers.

Of the 126 million inhabitants, 83.3 million in the country have received at least one dose of the vaccine, with which 89% of the population aged 18 and over have received at least one dose.

Meanwhile, 76.5 million have completed their vaccination schedule.

Since the end of December 2020, almost 201.3 million vaccine doses have arrived in Mexico from the American Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna, the British AstraZeneca, the Russian Sputnik V and the Chinese CanSino and Sinovac.
