Assembly voted for a triple punishment for squatters

The National Assembly, while considering a presidential majority bill, voted this Friday to triple the sanctions imposed on squatters. Now they face up to three years in prison.

This measure, which is one of the key provisions of the text aimed at better protecting homeowners from non-payment of rent, was passed by 25 votes to 3.

In fact, he equates the sanctions against squatters with those currently aimed at “the owner who changes the lock”, i.e. up to 3 years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros, defended speaker macronist MP Guillaume Kasbaryan.

To cover all cases, not just “violation of residence”, another provision adopted makes it an offense to occupy without title or title, including premises for economic use, as required by the LR group.

In addition, another article tightens the penalties for those who pretend to be a landlord for the purpose of renting out property.

Guillaume Kasbarian argued that the purpose of the text was primarily to protect “small owners who don’t ride gold” who sometimes face years of litigation to regain the right to use their property.

For their part, the left remained opposed to the “anti-tenant” law and the “criminalization of all the low-income.” In particular, she criticizes the text for allowing residents weakened by inflation and rising electricity bills to take to the streets. “We talk a lot about squatters, but most of the people who will be affected are people who regularly moved into housing with rent and found themselves in the process of being evicted due to non-payment of rent,” criticized LFI MP William Martinet.
