Wall Street opens in green and the Dow Jones rises 0.06%

Wall Street opened this Thursday in green and the Dow Jones Industrial Average, its main indicator, rose 0.06% awaiting a speech by the president of the US Federal Reserve (Fed), Jerome Powell.

Twenty minutes after the start of operations on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones stood at 33,685 units and the selective S&P 500 rose 0.08%, up to 4,318 points.

For its part, the Nasdaq market composite index, in which the main technology companies are listed, rose 0.13%, up to 13,332 points.

Investors were betting on caution with an eye on Powell’s speech this afternoon at a New York club to look for clues about the central bank’s next steps in the path of interest rates.

Among the data released this morning, unemployment benefit applications fell last week to 198,000, less than expected, which reflects the strength of the labor market and may influence the Fed’s next decision.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond continued its rise following that data, reaching 4.934%.

By sector, gains predominated and were led by communications (1.35%) and technology (0.26%) companies compared to the losses of non-essential goods firms (-0.75%) and real estate (- 0.64%).

Among the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones, the advances of Verizon (1.63%) stood out, a contagion effect of its rival AT&T (6.5%), which today published results that showed lower profits but greater liquidity in the midst of its business restructuring.

Outside of that group, the streaming giant Netflix soared almost 15% after yesterday reporting an increase in subscribers despite the Hollywood strikes.
