Oscar 2022: Kirsten Dunst, Judi Dench and Ariana DeBose, three talents fighting for the award

Among the most interesting categories of oscarsfew are equal in interest to the acting awards and this year the competition for the trophy for Best Supporting Actress is particularly peculiar.

Let’s see the competitors. On the one hand we have Kirsten Dunst, a veteran actress who, despite having a record of solid performances, is still best remembered for her role as Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy.

Now Dunst has her first Academy nomination for her work in the current favorite movie “The Power of the Dog,” where she plays the tortured Rose Gordon, object of the wrath of misanthropic rancher Phil Burbank – Benedict Cumberbatch in a role that it also puts him in the running for an Oscar.

On the other hand we have Judi Dench, legendary actress and Oscar winner in 1998 for her performance as Queen Elizabeth I in “Shakespeare in Love”. This year she could make history by becoming the oldest Academy Award winner at 87, beating Anthony Hopkins’ record by three years.

In the middle of this is Ariana DeBose, another candidate who could make history. She is not only a woman not only Afro-Latin, but also openly bisexual, something that despite the apparent openness of Hollywood remains in the minority. Additionally, if she wins for her performance as Anita in “West Side Story” she would repeat the achievement that Rita Moreno did playing the same character in 1962.

In his favor are his victories in both the Bafta and the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, main predictors of the winner of the Academy Awards.

The other two candidates cannot be ruled out either. Actress and singer Jessie Buckley has been a critical favorite for her work on “The Lost Daughter,” while Aunjanue Ellis may be the kind of surprise the Oscars like to surprise us with every year.
