Julia Roberts will present the Chopard Trophy for Newcomers of the Year at the Cannes Film Festival

The Chopard Trophy will have a very prestigious godmother this year: it is indeed Julia Roberts who was chosen to present this prize at the Cannes Film Festival to two young actors (a man and a woman) on the rise. Last year, Jessica Chastain presented the award to Jessie Buckley and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

“For a movie fan like me, Julia Roberts is a legend. Her energy and talent have left an indelible mark on successive generations and it is an honor that she has agreed to symbolically pass on the experience of her rich career to the two winners of the 2022 Chopard Trophy,” said the co-president and director. Chopard’s artistic work, Caroline Scheufele, in a press release relayed by variety.

The future of cinema

The Chopard Trophy is not just a glamorous prize, it is also an indicator of future movie stars. Winners include Florence Pugh, Joe Alwyn, Marion Cotillard, Ezra Miller, Shailene Woodley, James McAvoy, John Boyega, Gael García Bernal, Diane Kruger, Léa Seydoux, and Anya Taylor-Joy, all of whom have become stars after being honored.

The prize will be awarded during a dinner in the presence of the president of the festival, Pierre Lescure, as well as his general delegate Thierry Frémaux, on May 19th.
