“Carmen” will be the first opera to be seen in Peru after two years of the pandemic

After two years of absence due to the pandemic, the Granda Festival returns to the stage to bring the best of opera to the country. The return will be with a new production of “Carmen”, a work by Georges Bizet that will be directed by the award-winning Peruvian director Jean Pierre Gamarra and musically directed by maestro Dmitry Korchak. The avant première will be on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. The functions will be on May 20, 22 and 24 at the Grand National Theater. Tickets are on sale at Teleticket with discounts of up to 15%.

In this edition, the Granda Festival will feature a cast of prominent European artists headed by the outstanding Russian mezzo-soprano Irina Shishkova, a frequent star of the Mariinsky Theater in Russia, in the main role of Carmen.

Along with her, the Franco-Italian tenor Florian Laconi will sing, as Don José. He is a frequent artist at the opera houses of Metz, Avignon, Nice, Montpellier, Paris, among other French stages.

The Greek baritone Dionysios Sourbis will play the bullfighter Escamillo. Sourbis was one of the winners of the Laurence Olivier Award for a production at the Royal Opera House in London, under the direction of Antonio Pappano.

Meanwhile, the Argentine soprano Jaquelina Livieri will be in charge of the character of Micaëla. She is one of the most important young singers today with a permanent presence at the legendary Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

The orchestra will be conducted by maestro Dmitry Korchak, who returns to Peru twelve years after his debut at the Granda Festival. The stage direction will be in charge of the award-winning Peruvian regista Jean Pierre Gamarra, winner of the Opera XXI award for Best Latin American Production, for Alzira, by Verdi, which was performed at the Gran Teatro Nacional. Our production will also include the participation of the National Choir of Peru, the National Children’s Choir of Peru and the Symphony Orchestra for Peru.
