Danny Boyle Hopes John Lydon Will Hate His Sex Pistols Biopic Series

A few days before the premiere of Pistol, his biopic series on the Sex Pistols, Danny Boyle harbors a rather disconcerting hope. Indeed, the director hopes that John Lydon, alias Johnny Rotten, the singer of the legendary group, will speak the greatest evil of his series!

“I love Lydon for what he’s done and I don’t want him to love (the show) – I want him to attack it. I think it’s his absolute right. Why would you change a behavior you’ve had all your life? “, declared the scenario writer during an interview granted to the Guardian.

A genius

Since the announcement of the series, John Lydon has repeatedly railed against what he considers “a middle-class tale” and “a rewriting of history”, arguing that he never gave his consent to the production. However, the artist would have simply refused any contact with Danny Boyle. However, the latter claims to have tried to involve the singer in the project which, let us remember, is adapted from Lonely Boy: Tales From A Sex Pistolthe book by Steve Jones, the band’s guitarist.

On this, as much Danny Boyle admires the figure of John Lydon whom he does not hesitate to qualify as “genius”, as much the point of view of Steve Jones was much more adapted to such an enterprise. “It’s like peeking through the keyhole. It allows you to observe the group as a whole. But you must be aware of the presence of a genius, and it is Rotten. He is the person who changed everything, a key cultural figure in our landscape,” concluded Danny Boyle.

Pistol lands on Disney+ on May 31.
